FLORA & FAUNA

Over four thousand species of flowering plants, three hundred varieties of ferns and innumerable variety of flowerless plants, mosses, algae, fungi, birches and exotic orchids can be sighted here. The jungles of oak, chestnut, cherry, maple, birch, alder, magnolia, buck-landis, pyrus and conifers are a safe haven for a rich and diverse variety of animals. Red Panda can be sighted in the jungles between Gairibas and Molley, on the way to Sandakphu. Barking deer, wild boar, the Himalayan bear, monkeys, wild cats, leopards, jackals and foxes etc. also inhabit the region. Darjeeling is also  home to about six hundred species of beautiful birds. A large number of migratory birds on their way to the plains, also visit the hills.
